Queen Street Trip
Last week the Year 2 syndicate visited Queen street to hunt for signs and symbols. The street was filled with different signs and symbols which give people information, direction or warnings. We learnt that signs can be very useful and is used to communicate important messages in a quick way. These are some of the signs we found on our trip.
Can you spot what messages the signs are communicating?
Friendship Fred
Room 20 would like to introduce you to a special friend. His name is Fred and we are helping him to be a good friend.
As a class we brainstormed what makes a good friend and drew pictures to show Fred how he too could be a good friend.
We would like you to let us know what you think makes a good friend.

Bula Vinaka!
Ruby recently went on a holiday to Fiji. While she was there she decided to write a postcard to Room 20. She tried to make her writing really exciting and described her holiday. Here is what she wrote.
Can you spot what makes Ruby's writing so exciting?
Bula From Ruby in Fiji
I climbed a coconut tree that was as tall as a giraffe. The swimming pool was as warm as the sun and as large as a humpback whale. Bula Vinaka.
See you soon.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!
This week the New Zealand Herald has been delivered to our classroom. We have been looking at the different parts of a newspaper article and how journalists write the news which we read everyday. Here are a few examples of articles we have written using the pictures from the newspaper.
A marvelous cook looked at the cooking book as he was preparing to cook. The book was as small as an ant. So he got all the ingredients like wine, chicken and tomatoes together. Some of it was hot. It was as hot as the sun. He paracticed the dish for four years. However he accidentally cut his hand so he had to put a plaster on his hand. After he had finished his cooking he ate it all up because it was extremely yummy!

In the swimming race two guys were racing against each other. Before they started they warmed up. When the race started they swam quickly. First they did breast stroke. After the races had finsihed they won a gold and bronze medal. They were so excited that they got a medal. Overall they had a fantastic time.
By Charlotte
A cook patiently waited to serve up a scrumptious stew. People watched the cook as quiet as mice while she told them how to make the delicious stew. After she'd finished the stew, she was very happy. She won the contest because the judge thought it was fantastic. Overall she had a spectacular time at the competition.

When the two men got into their boat they were really excited to do their race. They splashed so much tht they got wet. One of their paddles fell into the water so they had to do it with one paddle. They were so surprised because they had won a medal.

Cornflake the Clown
"Honk, Honk" went the tooter. All the children turned around to see who it was but Cornflake was nowhere to be seen. Then he came out and said hello to everyone. He asked us if we could say hello to him and the children said it as loud as a lion. The first trick he did was to get a red ball and he pulled one ball after the other out of one ball. Secondly he got someone callled Madeline to come on the stage and she helped him with some tricks. She got to have a balloon. My favourite bit was the red ball trick because he kept saying, "Oh man!"
By Hannah
Cornflake had alot of tricks to do. He made a pizza disappear and everyone clapped for him. Cornflake is as funny as a silly guy. He also had a very funny chicken and he said that this chicken had been in a war and that he would always stand up straight. But the chicken didn't. At the end Cornflake stepped on his chair, that had his suitcase with his name printed on it, he flicked it up with his foot and caught it. It was interesting and exciting watching him do his silly tricks.

The hall was filled with a lot of excited children waiting patiently for Cornflake the clown to arrive. Then a blanket osf silence covered the hall. After that a loud honking sound interrupted the middle of waiting time. In came Cornflake with an interesting smile on his face. One of his tricks was a string which he pulled out of his mouth. It was a very long piece of string. Overall my favourite part was seeing Cornflake because he has a funny looking face.

Signs around our school
This Term we are learning about Communication. We learnt that this means to share information with someone. One of the ways we communicate is by using signs and symbols. Today we went on a sign hunt around our school and these are the signs we found.
Why do you think signs and symbols are such a popular way to communicate information?
